Although iOS 12.4 has been released to the public yesterday, there is an update for iOS 10 and iOS 9 on unsupported iOS devices. These updates come in iOS versions of 9.3.6 and 10.3.4. And yes, we are talking about the cellular iPads and the iPhones that don’t meet the requirements for the iOS 12 updates.
The iOS 9.3.6 and 10.3.4 updates have security patches regarding the GPS services and system clock. This is a mandatory security update, which means that the update MUST be installed on your iPad or iPhone no later than 3 November. If you do not update by the deadline, your iOS devices will have performance issues from a manufacturing error. Your iPhone will also display the time and date improperly.
The update applies to the iPhone 4s and 5 models, iPad mini 1st generation WiFi + Cellular, iPad 2 WiFi + Cellular, iPad 3rd generation WiFi + Cellular and iPad 4th generation WiFi + Cellular. This update is released due to a GPS time rollover issue that affects GPS-enabled devices on April 6th, 2019. Affected iOS devices are not impacted until the 3rd of November.
You can get the update for your cellular iPad or iPhone by doing it over-the-air by going to Software Update in Settings > General. If you are lacking space in your iPhone or iPad, you have to do the old-fashioned way. You have to connect your iPhone to iTunes and then press Check for Update. While your iPhone updates, do not unplug it from your computer. Make sure to connect to WiFi in order to install the iOS update!
After the update, make sure your iPhone is up to date by going to Settings > About and look at the Software Version number. If the number is the same as the aforementioned number, then you have the security patches installed.
To conclude, the update does not affect the WiFi iPad models and iPod touch models. The update is a mandatory security update as the cellular iPads and iPhones running older iOS versions can get performance issues if it’s not installed by 3 November. On the other hand, if you still have an old iPhone or iPad on iOS 9 or 10 in your stash, then you better head to Settings and update before November comes!
