Sileo

It was only a couple of days ago that the Sileo Team announced the upcoming release of the Sileo package manager for iOS 13 on the new bootrom-based checkra1n jailbreak. Early morning on this Christmas Day, the Sileo Team delivered on that promise.

In an announcement shared just this morning, the Sileo Team said that users could add a custom repository to their Cydia app on the checkra1n jailbreak to find everything they would need to install Sileo on their liberated iOS 13 device:

Sileo checkra1n notice

As it would seem, the Sileo Team has chosen not to offer Sileo for installation via the checkra1n team’s native Loader app, which is a bummer given just how seamlessly integrated the loader app is with the jailbreak. Instead, jailbreakers would need to use the following repository in Cydia:

repo.getsileo.app

It remains to be seen if this will change in the near future, and personally, I would prefer that Sileo were offered natively through the Loader app as opposed to a Cydia repository.

Another substantial bummer is that installing Sileo forcefully uninstalls Cydia. Users can’t opt out of this, and perhaps more astonishingly, there doesn’t seem to be a straightforward way of getting Cydia back. Upon installing Sileo, the checkra1n launcher app doesn’t so much as display the option to revert to Cydia, and we don’t yet know if an update for the checkra1n jailbreak will change this in the future. Albeit extremely inconvenient, users could always restore their device and re-jailbreak it to get Cydia back.

For those interested in using Installer in the future, other prominent members (endorsed by checkra1n lead developer Luca Todesco via Retweets) also appear to warn about some potential compatibility issues with stemming from the replacement of Sam Bingner’s APT release with the one offered by CoolStar:

On a more positive note, Sileo has its advantages over Cydia, including a speedy Swift-based framework, native dark mode support, and a refreshing eye candy user interface.

It should be noted that this is the first time that Sileo has been made available on a jailbreak tool not authored by the Electra Team. Previously, the package manager was only available on the Chimera and Electra jailbreaks, and an official solution for the unc0ver jailbreak never came to fruition despite promises made to do so.
